چکیده

Atrial distension, which stimulates atrial natriuretic peptide secretion by atrial myocytes, also stretches nonmuscle cells. In a noncontracting in vitro preparation of combined right and left atria we demonstrated by electron microscopy that, at 37°C, transition from zero pressure to a physiological distending pressure of 5.1 mm Hg rapidly rendered atrial endocardial endothelium permeable to the macromolecular probes horseradish peroxidase (HRP; Mr, =40,000) and wheat germ agglutinin-HRP (Mr, =70,000); each probe was introduced at the atrial cavitary endocardial surface. Stretch-dependent permeabilization was also demonstrable in spontaneously contracting atria, was reversed by removing the distending pressure, and

A phenomenological muscle model to assess history dependent effects in human movement.

Most musculoskeletal models used to analyze human movement utilize Hill-type muscle models that account for state dependent intrinsic muscle properties (e.g., force-length-velocity relationships), but rarely do these models include history dependent effects (e.g., force depression or enhancement). While the relationship between muscle shortening and force depression can be well characterized by...

Stretch-dependent activation and desensitization of mitogen-activated protein kinase in carotid arteries.

Arterial smooth muscle stretch is an important physiological modulator of vascular function. To identify intracellular processes altered during muscle stretch, we found previously that extracellular signal-regulated kinase-mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activity increased in response to the application of mechanical loads. In the present study, stretch-dependent activation of MAPK in p...

Stretch-dependent slow force response in isolated rabbit myocardium is Na+ dependent.

OBJECTIVE Stretch induces functional and trophic effects in mammalian myocardium via various signal transduction pathways. We tested stretch signal transduction on immediate and slow force response (SFR) in rabbit myocardium. METHODS Experiments were performed in isolated right ventricular muscles from adult rabbit hearts (37 degrees C, 1 Hz stimulation rate, bicarbonate-buffer). Muscles were...

Integration of signal pathways for stretch-dependent growth and differentiation in vascular smooth muscle.

The vascular smooth muscle phenotype is regulated by environmental factors, such as mechanical forces, that exert effects on signaling to differentiation and growth. We used the mouse portal vein in organ culture to investigate stretch-dependent activation of Akt, ERK, and focal adhesion kinase (FAK), which have been suggested to be involved in the regulation of stretch-dependent protein synthe...

Functional relevance of the stretch-dependent slow force response in failing human myocardium.

Stretch induces immediate and delayed inotropic effects in mammalian myocardium via distinct mechanosensitive pathways, but these effects are poorly characterized in human cardiac muscle. We tested the effects of stretch on immediate and delayed force response in failing human myocardium. Experiments were performed in muscle strips from 52 failing human hearts (37 degrees C, 1 Hz, bicarbonate b...

Activation of Na+-permeant Cation Channel by Stretch and Cyclic AMP-dependent Phosphorylation in Renal Epithelial A6 Cells

It is currently believed that a nonselective cation (NSC) channel, which responds to arginine vasotocin (an antidiuretic hormone) and stretch, regulates Na+ absorption in the distal nephron. However, the mechanisms of regulation of this channel remain incompletely characterized. To study the mechanisms of regulation of this channel, we used renal epithelial cells (A6) cultured on permeable supp...
